Yesterday was peaceful and lovely, including the beautiful sunset over the Las Vegas valley. I hope to always have a grateful heart for days like that. It is true that we often don’t appreciate things until they are gone or are slipping away from us. It isn’t until we lose our health, or lose a loved one, or lose our financial stability, or lose something else of value that our eyes of gratitude are able to really see the blessings that we commonly take for granted. Maintaining a grateful heart is a commandment from God. Why? Because it is one of the most important things we can do to be happy in this mortal life. And God wants us to be happy.
I am grateful to have the temple in our valley. In the temple we are taught more completely the plan of God for His children. We make covenants to help us stay close to the Lord. I have felt the supernal blessings of peace and comfort in the temple. My heart is thankful.
What a blessing it is to perceive color. And yet that blessing is not available to all. Many of the patients I work with each day have advanced glaucoma and are not able to fully appreciate God’s beautiful offerings. God often blesses the world with vibrant scenes and I am thankful to be able to receive them. The rich colors in the image below played out during a recent afternoon at the Red Rock National Conservation Area in Las Vegas.
Recently, Michelle and I were blessed to participate in The Nativity, a yearly re-enactment of the Savior’s birth, performed at Opportunity Village in Las Vegas. I love the Christmas season. During this special time, God fills my heart with conviction of the reality and divinity of Jesus Christ as the literal son of our Heavenly Father. The birth, life, and mission of the Savior bring great hope and peace to my soul.
