Joy in the Jouney- Kayaking in Style

Life can be overwhelming as we try to keep up with the myriad of demands on our time and energy. And we often put much of that energy into things over which we have no control. One of the critical lessons of life is to enjoy the present moment. We are not to stress excessively about past events. And we are not to worry unnecessarily about the future. We must find happiness in today and in this very moment of today.

I appreciate my son James who often enjoys the moment, making an extra effort to find the fun, the joy and the good that exist at any given time. Sure, many will enjoy riding a kayak at some point in their life. But how many will ride a kayak in this manner — dressed to the hilt — just for fun?

Gratitude- The Simple Things

The events surrounding our Christmas celebration this year were unusual. We traveled to a small town in West Texas named Big Spring. Michael is here, fulfilling his duties as a newly hired fire fighter. Michelle, Richard, Alan, James and I arrived to unite our family during this special season of the year. The memories of dear David are close to our hearts and I have prayed he would be allowed to participate in some form.

Our society often demands celebrations filled with light, noise, movement and other stimuli. Costly gifts are often the expected norm. But we have enjoyed a few special days together- days filled with simple activities and conversation. Just hanging around together has been a treat.

I am learning to be more fully grateful for these precious times with my family. And the spiritual feelings of the Christmas season have renewed my soul, again witnessing of the reality and divinity of Jesus as our Savior. My heart is thankful.

All Things Denote There is a God- More Than a Performance

Michelle and I were participants this year in the reenactment of The Nativity at Opportunity Village. Throughout this past week, the multi-evening event was pleasant and fun but felt somewhat procedural. That is, until the last performances on Saturday night. Between performances that night, the cast joined a men’s choir in singing “Silent Night.” During that song, the reality of the Savior’s birth was again felt deep in my heart.

I had learned previously of the goodness of the God-fearing shepherds that tended the sheep that special night. I was representing those holy men in our modern-day reenactment. After singing with the men’s group, I went out to the next performance and stood in the staged shepherds’ field. I wondered to myself if I would have been worthy to be one of the ancient shepherds of Bethlehem. As that performance ended, a cute, little, blond girl came up to me and asked who I was. I responded that I was a Shepherd. Then her next question was penetrating. She asked if I was a nice shepherd. The young girl’s question seemed inspired as I had wondered, minutes earlier, if I could measure up as one asked to tend a portion of the Lord’s flock.

Saturday evening, I was not just a performer. I was blessed to feel deeply of the Savior’s reality and of His influence upon my soul.

All Things Denote There is a God- God Sees Differently

Last night around midnight, Michelle poked her head out the back door and called my name. I responded and soon was back in the house. When she saw my camera in tow, she said, “What are you taking a picture of?” It did seem dark and bleak outside to the naked eye. But with a long exposure, the hidden beauty of the scene became apparent. So it is with our Heavenly Father. Although we often only see the bleak and the dark, He knows the hidden beauty around us and within us. Often it takes a “long exposure” for that beauty to become manifest.

Joy in the Journey- Looking in all the Wrong Places

Peace and serenity are gifts from God. They are not dependent upon the circumstances of our lives. Peace and serenity can be found in what appear to be unlikely situations, if we are in step with God’s mind and will. The calm, peaceful feeling from this image came from an unlikely setting– a holiday evening in the city of glitz, Las Vegas. We are eligible for God’s gifts even in those times and situations that make them seem unlikely.
